Place a collection of different types of paints, in their original containers, on a table. Encourage the children to handle and then discuss the different containers that paints come in—for example, tubes (oil), plastic bottles (tempera), and cans (latex). You could also ask the children to look for specific letters on the containers. All the containers need to be tightly sealed so they cannot be opened by the children.

Fold a piece of construction paper in half, then open it up. Encourage the children to put some paint on the fold line, and then fold the paper over and press down to spread the paint. Open the paper up and let the paint dry. When the paint is dry, discuss with the children the different colors that were used and the designs that were made. Ask the children what the designs look like, or what they remind them of. This activity is similar to looking at clouds with the children and talking about the shapes they see.

While the children are finger painting, encourage them to draw some letters in the paint. To make this activity more challenging, ask the children to write their names in finger paint.

Invite the children to help paint some signs for the playground such as “STOP,” “ONE WAY,” “EXIT,” “CHILDREN CROSSING,” “PARKING,” or “SPEED LIMIT 25.” Encourage the children to print and create signs of their own.

Invite the children to paint a large box and then encourage them to use it for dramatic play.

Bring in an artist’s palette that has been used and ask the children to identify and talk about all the colors on the palette.

To encourage dramatic play, bring in some paintbrushes, rollers, wet paint signs, empty paint cans, masking tape, and drop cloths. The children can pretend to paint the housekeeping area or the walls of the classroom.
